New TS4000H Toxic Gas Detector with HART®TS4000H Toxic Gas Detector with HART®
Communications

The challenge to improve work place safety while also reducing the number of plant technicians responsible for safety has made even the simplest of safety equipment maintenance tasks a heavy burden. This challenge, however, is being met by process industry plants through a growing investment in automation technology.

The HART two-way digital communication protocol is one example of process automation technology that is helping plant technicians meet the work place safety challenge. HART is designed for use with intelligent measurement and control instruments, which communicate using a 4 – 20 mA analog signal. HART enables digital communication while analog signal transmission takes place at the same time. This makes it an ideal communication protocol for legacy installations, since it requires no additional wires.

HART now makes it easier than ever to provide fixed toxic gas monitoring with our TS4000H Toxic Gas Detector in hazardous plant areas. Standard HART commands make it easy for systems to configure and adjust the TS4000H to the particular requirements of the plant. This smart field device, for example, can be tagged with a name for greater ease of use (ex. “toxic detector in mixing room”). Alarm and warning set points can be adjusted, delay times set, and alarms acknowledged or reset by simply sending a command. Such real-time, continuous access to device variables improves control.

Because the TS4000H is equipped with event logging, managers and technicians have access to time-stamped records of all maintenance performed on the device. Accurate entries for calibration, gas checks, and sensor replacement provide objective evidence of regulatory compliance. These records are particularly useful during quality system audits, and since they are generated automatically, make producing documentation on demand more efficient.

The benefits of the HART-equipped TS4000H are not limited to better information management and predictive maintenance. Through HART, a user can check the status of the TS4000H unit and respond to a fault when it is issued. Guesswork is eliminated. Supplied with information about the nature of the fault and its frequency, power supply voltage, sensor voltage, and sensor life, workers can make accurate diagnostics about the condition of the device before setting foot on the field.

Incorporating HART into the TS4000H enhances the usefulness of this toxic gas detector, permitting users to integrate the device more fully into process automation. Benefits of the TS4000H derived from the communication protocol become increasingly evident as more detectors are installed plant-wide. Beyond maintenance, plants stand to gain from greater workforce efficiency, asset performance, and fewer unplanned shutdowns.

About the TS4000H Toxic Gas Detector
The Model TS4000H Intelligent Toxic Gas Detector continuously monitors toxic gases in the ppm range or oxygen in percent by volume, delivering highly accurate detection and protection. The unit features one person calibration and can virtually self-calibrate by simply activating a magnetic switch and applying gas. It provides status indication and alarm outputs. In addition to the HART configuration, 8 amp relays and dual redundant Modbus are available. The detector comes with regulatory approvals by CSA and GOST, is certified under the ATEX directive, and has the CE Marking. It is also SIL 2 suitable.

The TS4000H monitors a variety of toxic gases including: ammonia, carbon monoxide, chlorine, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen sulfide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, oxygen deficiency, ozone, and sulfur dioxide. The system displays gas concentrations up to 500 ppm, fault codes for troubleshooting, prompts when calibration is needed, and provides complete status to the Control Room. Additionally, the TS4000H simplifies operation and maintenance and reduces downtime by providing remaining sensor life indication.

Process engineers who need to protect people and equipment will find that the TS4000H Intelligent Gas Detector is ideal for chemical, oil/gas, wastewater and other hazardous environments. Additional applications include public utilities, refineries, pharmaceuticals and food and beverage.
